Weekly Update 11/30/15

Upcoming Events:

  • 12/3 @ 7:00 pm Tree Lighting on the Square by Little Shop of Stories (FAVE chorus sings)
  • 12/16 @ 11:30 Black/McFaddin UOI Celebration: Families are invited to come see what students have been working on in this term

Welcome Back! I hope you and your family enjoyed the Thanksgiving Break. I enjoyed time with family and friends and am excited to come back for the remainder of term 3.

In the week before the break students explored the impact of innovations of Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin and Samuel Morse. These inventors/innovators worked in the field of electricity that we are currently studying in science. This week we will continue our inquiry into the impact of innovations by building various types of circuits.

Students also attended our first College and Career Explorations for the year. I led an exploration into the field of Architecture. The students worked with partners to design and create structures out of dry spaghetti noodles. The goal was to have the tallest structure that would support a marshmallow. I enjoyed seeing the partners plan and try out their designs.

In math we are continuing with addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers this week. Attached is the homework and video lessons that will provide support at home. Lesson 8 uses number lines for modeling and Lesson 9 encourages the numeric method of finding common denominators.
